When we look at the largest optical telescope ever built, only buildings like a cathedral can come to mind.
Is the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), in Chile, of which you can see a video below, and which will be finished by the end of 2024.
Construction started in 2017 at Cerro Armazones, and it will be topped with a dome the size of a cathedral. Its main mirror will measure 38 meters, consisting of 798 segments. Each individual mirror measures 1.4 meters and 5 centimeters thick.
With the ELT, signs of life will be sought in distant worlds, the nature of dark energy and matter will be studied, and the origins of the Universe will be explored.
